Reliable cabling
The cables used in building and installation projects play an important role in reducing the risks of fire.
Approximately 80% of any electro-technical installation consists of cables and bundles of wires that are laid throughout a building. The cabling is mostly interconnected and often invisible.
Approximately 90% of synthetic materials used in electro-technical installations are incorporated in cables. The average office building can contain between 2 and 5 kg of cable per square metre.

Danger
In the event of fire, the plastic in cable can reach a very high temperature and the resulting heat can set other materials alight. The greatest danger for man, animals and equipment is actually in the emission of hazardous combustion gases and smoke.
Most cables are produced using chlorous plastics. These plastics in themselves represent the most danger for man, animal and equipment. The toxic smoke emitted during a fire is very harmful to the human body, causing irreparable damage to the lungs, when inhaled. The subsequent damage caused by the toxic gases can be considerable.
European guidelines for building materials (CPD)
Following the publication of the European guidelines for building materials, the building industry is more aware of the inherent danger of the presence of a growing number of cables in buildings and tunnels. Further evidence of the need for more efficient fire prevention measures can be seen in the devastation caused by the fires at Dusseldorf Airport, the Montblanc Tunnel and the Kaprun ski tunnel.
